The Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO) recently highlighted a slight decline in Texas upstream employment for November, marking the first drop after five consecutive months of growth. According to TIPRO’s analysis of the latest Current Employment Statistics report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas upstream employment totaled 194,400 in November, a decrease of 1,500 positions compared to October. This included a reduction of 600 jobs in oil and gas extraction and 900 in the services sector.

Despite the decrease, demand for talent in the Texas oil and natural gas industry remains robust. TIPRO’s workforce data revealed over 10,000 active job postings in November, including more than 3,000 new listings. Texas led the nation in job postings within the industry, with California and New York following far behind. Houston, Midland, and Odessa emerged as the top cities for job opportunities, reflecting the state’s ongoing leadership in oil and gas production. Companies like Cefco, Love’s, and John Wood Group dominated the rankings for job postings, showcasing the diverse opportunities available in the sector.

TIPRO also reported significant tax contributions from Texas energy producers, with $488 million in oil production taxes and $157 million in natural gas production taxes collected in November. These revenues play a vital role in supporting public education, infrastructure, and other state programs. Meanwhile, new forecasts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration project sustained growth in U.S. crude oil production through 2025, with the Permian Basin continuing to drive a significant portion of output. The latest short-term energy outlook predicts record-breaking production levels, reinforcing Texas’ pivotal role in the nation’s energy landscape.
