Synthica Energy Breaks Ground on Renewable Natural Gas Facility

Cincinnati-based Synthica Energy has officially broken ground on a new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility in Rome, Georgia, just outside Atlanta. Named “Synthica Rome,” this facility will be the first of its kind in the Greater Atlanta area and is set to divert nearly 250,000 tons of waste from local landfills each year. By offering food and beverage manufacturers and other clients a closer location for processing pre-consumer waste, Synthica aims to lower costs and reduce emissions, while its anaerobic digestion technology will convert organic material into RNG, cutting down on thousands of tons of CO2 and methane annually. The facility will be located at 100 Regional Park Rd. in Rome (30161).

“At Synthica Energy, sustainability is more than just turning organic waste into renewable natural gas,” said Grant Gibson, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer of Synthica Energy. “It’s our entire culture—from dependable waste stream pricing to uninterrupted access to top-tier anaerobic digestion services, and a waste-to-energy platform that helps make the world better. We’re thrilled to bring this business model to the Rome/Atlanta area.”

Synthica Rome is the company’s third RNG facility under development. The first, “Synthica St. Bernard” in Cincinnati, Ohio, broke ground last year and is expected to become operational in 2025. More recently, Synthica began work on another facility, Synthica San Antonio, and has further plans for expansion into Houston, Louisville, and New Orleans. Over the next few years, Synthica also aims to establish clean energy facilities in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New York, and Pennsylvania.

“We’re excited to welcome Synthica Energy to Rome and Floyd County, and it’s a pleasure to celebrate this groundbreaking ceremony,” said Missy Kendrick, President & CEO of the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority. “This new facility represents a major step forward for sustainable development in our region. Synthica’s facility will be the first of its kind in Greater Atlanta, providing local manufacturers with an effective solution to turn their organic waste into clean, renewable energy. We’ve been supporting Synthica throughout their site evaluation process, and we look forward to seeing this facility come to life.”

Anaerobic digestion, which converts organic materials into energy, presents an exciting opportunity for expanding renewable energy across the United States, said Sam Schutte, Co-Founder and CEO of Synthica Energy. “This technology has the potential to redefine waste management for food and beverage producers, while creating mutually beneficial opportunities for the cities where we’re building,” Schutte said. “It’s not just about waste management; it’s also about capital investment, job creation, and developing a more eco-friendly footprint—all while providing manufacturers with an innovative, sustainable solution to the growing food waste issue.”
