Good morning. For just the second time since it became a federal holiday in 1983, Martin Luther King Jr. Day coincides with Inauguration Day today. The last time it happened was when Bill Clinton took office in 1997. The next time MLK Day and Inauguration Day are scheduled to fall on the same day will be in 2053.
Markets: That’s a wrap on the stock market under outgoing President Biden. Share prices went up and to the right during his tenure. Since Biden took office four years ago, the S&P 500 climbed more than 55%, the Dow over 39%, and the Nasdaq almost 46%, per Dow Jones Market Data. We won’t see any market reaction to Trump’s inaugural address or first-day actions until tomorrow, because trading is shut down for MLK Day.

Thanks to freezing temperatures, the ceremony will begin around 11:30am ET in the Capitol Rotunda. About 30 minutes later, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath of office to Trump, and Carrie Underwood will perform “America the Beautiful” (although it would be fun if they switched roles). About 20,000 ticketed guests will watch the ceremony on screens at Capital One Arena, which will become the setting for the inauguration parade, while Trump encouraged people who could not get tickets to watch the inauguration on TV at indoor venues. The last time the elements forced an inauguration indoors was when Ronald Reagan took the oath in 1985.

Not every billionaire will be in Washington for the inauguration—some will be in Davos today for the start of the four-day gathering in the Swiss mountain town. The newly sworn-in Donald Trump will take part virtually while fellow world leaders, top CEOs, and heads of civil society organizations rub elbows and listen to complaints about private jet fuel costs. This year’s theme is “Collaboration in the Intelligent Age,” with topics that will “explore how to relaunch growth, harness new technologies, and strengthen social and economic resilience.” It’s as good a reason as any to spend four days skiing.

Hours after three Israeli women were released from captivity in Gaza on Sunday, roughly 90 Palestinian prisoners were freed, Israel’s prison service said in a statement early Monday morning, as a long-awaited cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas went into effect. The truce prompted celebrations in Gaza, relief for families and hope for an end to a devastating 15-month war.
