Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) recently announced it will more than double its Permian Basin resource to 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent through the acquisition of companies owned by the Bass family of Fort Worth, Texas, with an estimated resource of 3.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent in New Mexico’s Delaware Basin, a highly prolific, oil-prone section of the Permian Basin.
Oil and Gas Mergers and Acquisitions
Since the early 1900’s, there have been thousands of oil and gas mergers and acquisitions, often making it difficult for a title examiner or attorney to determine who the current owners of oil and gas assets are. In Oklahoma, many times there isn’t a specific conveyance document filed against the lands and an examiner must search other miscellaneous indexes to find notices of mergers and acquisitions.
One useful resource for researching this data was developed by the National Association of Division Order Analyst (NADOA). The NADOA prints and donates the Mergers and Acquisition book, free of charge, to attendees of industry conventions. Originally published by OXY, NADOA resurrected this reference guide in 2003. Members provide information to keep the directory current and the M&A Directory is updated as information is provided.
The book is widely used and by looking at the companies on the left-hand side in lower case, you can see on the right-hand side of the page who the current contact or owner of assets is, in upper case.
We decided to take an in-depth look at this data and present it in a new and innovative way using Tableau, business intelligence software that helps people see and understand their data. This method helped us achieve a much richer insight as to the data.
