Italian energy giant Eni has unveiled one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, marking a significant leap in its technological capabilities. Named HPC6, this cutting-edge machine, with a development cost exceeding €100 million, is set to revolutionize Eni’s oil and gas discovery processes while also advancing its clean energy and decarbonization strategies.
Equipped with nearly 14,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), HPC6 can perform complex artificial intelligence functions and sophisticated calculations at unprecedented speeds. This capability will allow Eni to process massive volumes of data obtained from drilling operations, seismic surveys, and reservoir simulations. The supercomputer will help pinpoint the location and size of oil and gas reserves, optimize drilling strategies, and improve production forecasting. Beyond traditional energy applications, HPC6 will play a pivotal role in advancing carbon storage projects, enhancing biofuel efficiency, and improving renewable energy production.
HPC6, which went live on Christmas Day in Ferrera Erbognone, a small town in Lombardy, Italy, is currently the fifth fastest supercomputer globally, according to the annual TOP500 list. Its launch underscores Eni’s commitment to in-house innovation, setting the company apart as it designs and builds its own supercomputing systems rather than relying on external cloud services.
Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi highlighted the strategic importance of this technological milestone, stating, “Innovation and the constant evolution of technologies are fundamental to maintaining and strengthening Eni’s leadership in the energy transition. Technological advancements allow us to use energy more efficiently, reduce emissions, and promote the development of new energy solutions.”
By integrating supercomputing across its operations, Eni is poised to accelerate its transformation toward achieving Net Zero emissions. With HPC6 as a cornerstone of its strategy, the company aims to enhance its competitive edge on the international stage while driving growth and sustainability.
