A Spanish infrastructure company, Redexis, has reached a significant milestone for Spain’s energy industry. The Madrid-based company announced that it has started injecting hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, into the country’s natural gas supply through Spain’s first hydrogen pipeline.
This project, which was officially inaugurated on September 20, marks the first fully operational renewable hydrogen blending initiative in Europe, according to Redexis. The initiative is part of a larger project in Mallorca and aligns with Spain’s push toward decarbonizing its energy industry. The goal is to demonstrate that “green” hydrogen, generated from renewable resources, can be successfully integrated into the existing natural gas infrastructure.
Margalida Prohens, president of the government of the Balearic Islands, which includes Mallorca, highlighted the significance of the project. “The Balearic Islands are taking a vital step toward energy transition by pioneering the first hydrogen pipeline transporting green hydrogen into the natural gas network. This clean energy is crucial for decarbonizing our islands and fighting climate change. It also opens doors for reindustrialization, positioning the islands as a hub for innovation and green investment,” she said.
The project is seen as a model that could be replicated across other regions of Spain and Europe. Miguel González Suela, Undersecretary for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, emphasized its broader potential. “This groundbreaking project showcases the enormous opportunity for green hydrogen generation in Spain. With the support of the government, which has provided 3 billion euros in backing, we are creating an ecosystem that attracts investment and fosters innovation. Together, we’re positioning Spain to lead the global hydrogen market,” Suela said.
At a ceremony marking the launch of the pipeline, Redexis CEO Fidel López Soria said, “This achievement marks a turning point in Spain’s energy transition. By injecting green hydrogen into the natural gas network, Redexis is not only showing its commitment to sustainability but also setting a precedent for other regions and countries. There is no other blending project of this scale in Europe.”
The inauguration took place at the Cas Tresorer site, the starting point for Mallorca’s natural gas network. Soria expressed optimism about the future: “We are taking a major step toward a cleaner, renewable future, proving that infrastructure can play a key role in transforming our energy system across Europe.”
Redexis is the only company in Spain authorized by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to install a green hydrogen injection system. The pipeline begins at Camino de las Baterías and connects with the San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus primary transport pipeline. Hydrogen injected into the system will be accessible to all natural gas customers in Mallorca who are connected to this network.
To ensure a seamless blend of hydrogen and natural gas, the system uses a static mixer that injects the necessary volume of hydrogen into the high-velocity natural gas stream. This blending process ensures a consistent gas composition with minimal turbulence.
The project is part of the Green Hysland initiative, which is supported by the European Union’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership. This initiative includes over 30 groups, ranging from energy companies to technology centers, all working together to push the boundaries of clean energy solutions.
