Canadian County is located in central Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 115,541. The county seat of Blaine County is El Reno, OK. The county is named for the Canadian River, which runs along much of its southern border.

Oil and Gas History

The Cana-Woodford (also known as the Anadarko-Woodford) is a liquids-rich shale formation that is named after Canadian County, OK, although the formation underlies several counties in the western half of the state.

Production in the Cana-Woodford kicked off in the 1930s from conventional vertical wells, with the industry’s first horizontal well coming in 2007. More recently, however, the counties that comprise the Cana fairway have been targeted for emerging oil plays, such as the SCOOP and STACK formations.

Canadian County currently ranks #5 in Oklahoma for total gas production with 316,527,077 cubic feet of natural gas produced in 2021.

Petroleum

Canadian County currently ranks #2 in Oklahoma for oil production with 13.4MM BBL of oil produced in 2021.

Major Oil and Gas Fields in Canadian County, Oklahoma

The Cana-Woodford (also known as the Anadarko-Woodford) was the first oil field to be operated in Canadian County, Oklahoma, however recently operators have begun to focus on the STACK “Sooner Trend (oil field), Anadarko basin, Canadian and Kingfisher (counties)”.

The STACK allows operators to target multiple formations from a single location and has proven to be a more active play as of late.
