Carter County is located in south-central Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 47,557. The county seat of Carter County is Ardmore, OK. The county was named for Captain Ben W. Carter, a Cherokee who lived among the Chickasaw.

In searching for anything filed in the Oklahoma Carter County Clerks office, the main limitation is that the online data is indexed only back to March 1999 and scanned images back to May 1999.

With respect to records filed prior in the county, as owners of properties, mineral rights, or other interests, and to view leases and deeds, you will need to visit the county seat, the fine city of Ardmore located in the Sooner State to review the records and get any copies which your lands or estate may be subject to.

Oil and Gas History

Beginning in the early 1900’s oil production spurred economic development in the county. Wildcatters have tested county oil and gas wells since the turn of the twentieth century. Oilmen such as Wirt Franklin, P. A. Chapman, Robert Hefner, Sr., and Lloyd Noble benefited from the rich Healdton Field, which opened in 1913. Hewitt, Fox, and other county oil fields contributed to the development of Ardmore as an important refining and oil center. Carter County is also home to The Healdton Oil Museum which is located in Healdton, OK.

Carter County currently ranks #15 in Oklahoma for total gas production with 43,301,097 cubic feet of natural gas produced in 2021.

Petroleum

Carter County currently ranks #8 in Oklahoma for oil production with 5.8MM BBL of oil produced in 2021.

Major Oil and Gas Fields in Carter County, Oklahoma

The Healdton Field is located in western Carter County and eastern Jefferson County. Because of the relative shallowness of the large oil pools and the cheapness of drilling a well, the Healdton Field became known as a “poor man’s field.” As of late the SCOOP has become the most active play in Carter County with horizontal drilling taking the lead over conventional wells.
