In the 1920s several petroleum companies drilled oil and gas wells around Sayre and Erick. Between 1948 and 1969 oil wells were being drilled near Elk City. In 1958 mineral industries in Beckham County employed 364 individuals and had an annual payroll of $1.7 million. In the late 1970s and early 1980s an oil boom and bust occurred.

The Granite Wash (GW) is a liquids-rich tight sands play about 160 miles long and 30 miles wide, covering parts of Western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. The Granite Wash covers parts of Hemphill, Roberts, and Wheeler Counties, TX, and Beckham, Custer, Roger Mills, and Washita Counties on the Oklahoma side of the play.
